Clean Sheet

A “clean sheet” means the defense and goalkeeper allowed zero goals in the match.

Example:

“Arsenal kept a clean sheet in their 2–0 win.”

The phrase goes back to when scores were recorded on paper — if the page stayed clean, no goals were conceded.

Why It Matters

For defenders and goalkeepers, a clean sheet is a badge of honor. Managers love them too: “Clean sheets win titles.”

Everyday Comparison (U.S. Sports)

The American equivalent is a shutout — but “clean sheet” carries a certain elegance, a little extra pride in the art of keeping things spotless at the back.
