High Press
A “high press” is when a team defends upfield, near the opponent’s goal, instead of dropping back.
Example:
“City’s pressing high here” means they’re trying to win the ball close to the opponent’s box to create immediate chances.
The high press demands energy and coordination — forwards chase defenders, midfielders close passing lanes, and the whole team squeezes space.
Why It Matters
It’s modern football’s signature move. Teams like Liverpool and Bayern Munich made pressing a weapon — turning defense into attack in a heartbeat.
Everyday Comparison (U.S. Sports)
Think of it as a full-court press in basketball — high risk, high reward, and thrilling when done right.
