Low Block / Deep Block
A “low block” (or “deep block”) is when a team defends very close to their own goal — compact, disciplined, and hard to break down.
Example:
“Burnley are sitting in a low block.” means they’re defending deep, limiting space behind them.
Why It Matters
It’s the antidote to possession-heavy teams. The low block forces attackers to play sideways, get frustrated, and take low-percentage shots.
Everyday Comparison (U.S. Sports)
Like a zone defense in basketball or a prevent defense in football — conservative, calculated, and all about forcing mistakes.
