Panenka

A “Panenka” is a cheeky type of penalty kick where the player chips the ball softly down the middle, letting the goalkeeper dive out of the way.

Example:

“He’s gone for the Panenka!” means the taker has tried that daring chip — and everyone’s holding their breath.

Why It Matters

Named after Antonín Panenka, who first pulled it off in the 1976 European Championship final to win the title for Czechoslovakia. It’s the ultimate blend of nerve and audacity.

Everyday Comparison (U.S. Sports)

Like calling a trick play in overtime or pulling off a no-look three-pointer to win — showmanship with everything on the line.
